Connect Claude to WordPress
How to connect Claude to WordPress with Meikero, from ZIP file to a first read-only answer. Keep this page in one tab and your WordPress admin in another.
This guide describes Meikero MCP 1.1.1, the version currently offered as the Free download. Free needs no registration and no license. Pro, Studio and Agency use the same plugin: you enter a license key when you want Claude to make changes.
Two different secrets. A purchase license key (starts with MK-) activates a paid plan. The connection (Bearer) key lets Claude connect. Never paste either into a support request, a public forum or a shared chat — support will never ask for them.
-
Download the plugin ZIP
Download Free v1.1.1No account needed. If you bought a paid plan, the same ZIP is also under My account → Downloads, and your license key is emailed to you and shown under My account → Meikero licenses together with its website limit and update period.
Keep the ZIP — you may need it again if you move Meikero to another site.
-
Install the plugin
- In WordPress, go to Plugins → Add New → Upload Plugin.
- Choose the ZIP and click Install Now. If an older Meikero version is installed, WordPress offers to replace it — accept.
- Click Activate. A Meikero menu appears in the admin sidebar with seven screens: Overview, Connection, Permissions, Available tools, History & backups, License & plan, and Settings & diagnostics. The Overview screen walks you through the next steps.
Requirements: WordPress 6.2 or newer, PHP 7.4 or newer, HTTPS and pretty permalinks (any setting other than “Plain”). Remote connections over plain HTTP are refused.
-
Paid plans only: activate your license
Using Free? Skip this step. For Pro, Studio or Agency:
- Open Meikero → License & plan.
- Paste your key and click Activate license.
- The page shows the license status, connected websites out of your plan’s limit, and the date until which updates are included.
Repeat on each site your plan covers (Pro 3, Studio 10, Agency unlimited). Every activated installation, including staging and local copies, uses one website seat.
If the license server is temporarily unreachable, a verified Pro or Studio activation keeps its paid tools on that website — the access is signed and stored locally. Agency access never extends past its paid period. Free reading continues in every case. License checks run twice a day; Check license retries immediately.
-
Choose what Claude can view and change
On Meikero → Permissions, the administrator decides what Claude may use. A license never turns any of this on for you.
- Data areas — site information, content, media, taxonomies, menus, WooCommerce, SEO, page builders, website checks, saved audit reports and version history, each off, view only or allowed to change.
- Folders — approve individual theme or plugin folders for reading or writing. Creating new files and editing existing ones are separate switches.
For the first connection, allow view-only access. Changes need a paid plan (or the one-time 4-hour trial) and a permission set to allow them.
-
Prepare the connection
On Meikero → Overview, click Prepare the connection. Meikero shows your site’s MCP URL and the full Authorization header value, which already starts with
Bearer. The key is shown once — copy both values now. Later, Manage connection reopens the setup and Meikero → Connection lets you add or revoke separate keys per AI client. The connection key is not your license key. You can revoke it and create a new one at any time; Claude will then need the new value.
-
Add the custom connector in Claude
- In Claude, open Customize → Connectors and add a custom connector. On Team and Enterprise plans an owner adds it under Organization settings → Connectors.
- Give it a name, such as your site’s domain, and paste the MCP URL.
- Under Authentication, choose No sign in.
- Under Request headers, add the name
Authorizationwith the copied valueBearer YOUR_CONNECTION_KEY— do not type a second “Bearer”. - Click Add, then switch the connector on in a new chat from the + menu → Connectors.
Back in Meikero, Verify connection confirms that an authenticated request from Claude has reached your site. Claude’s screens can change, and custom connector availability is set by Anthropic. The full walkthrough, with troubleshooting, is in how to connect Claude to WordPress with MCP. Other AI clients — ChatGPT, Codex, Cursor — are shown as “Coming soon” in the setup and are not supported yet.
-
Run a read-only test
In a new chat with the connector enabled, ask:
Describe this WordPress site using the available Meikero tools: WordPress version, active theme, plugins and published pages. Do not change anything.Claude should answer from your real site data. If it cannot connect, ask it to run
get_connection_diagnostics, or open Meikero → Settings & diagnostics — see Support. -
Enable write permissions deliberately (paid plans)
When the read-only answers match reality, give write access one area at a time — for example, pages and posts first, or a single theme folder. Before bigger theme work, ask Claude to save a checkpoint:
Save a project version of themes/my-theme named “Before header changes”.A checkpoint holds that folder’s supported text files, not the database or media, so keep your normal backups too. Everything Claude changed is listed under Meikero → History & backups, with restore options.
-
Disconnect a license, pause a website or move it
Each activated website uses one of your plan’s seats. To move Meikero to another site:
- On the old site, open License & plan and click Disconnect this website. This frees the seat.
- Install the plugin on the new site and activate the same key.
No access to the old site? On meikero.com, open My account → Meikero licenses: each connected website can be paused (Claude’s access is blocked within a minute while the credentials stay in place) or disconnected (the seat is released). Pausing and resuming need Meikero 0.9.18 or newer on that website; older installations show Update required. Staging and local installations also use a seat in the current release.
-
Updates after installation
Meikero offers signed updates in the WordPress Plugins screen while your plan’s update period is active; Free-version updates are always included. If an update does not appear, go to Dashboard → Updates → Check again. You can always install a newer ZIP from My account → Downloads or the Download page over the current version instead. After the included 12 months, renewing updates and support is optional — see pricing.
